Roller Derby Pictures

I finally got a chance to watch a local roller derby match. A couple of years ago, a friend (who was on a roller derby team) asked me to join her team, but I had just had my LASIK surgery and couldn't engage in contact sports for months, so I didn't. I had gone to watch one of their practices, but I never actually got around to watching a match. So this was a fun treat. It was also a rare opportunity to spend time with a couple of members of the Squiggle-FLAN that I don't usually get to spend individual time with, and that was nice too. The rink where the match was held had a protective plexiglass wall around the rink, so I couldn't use any flash. That, and the speed of the players means that all my pictures are very blurry. But there here anyway.

The league is called the Tampa Bay Derby Darlins. The match we saw was between the Switchblade Sisters team and the Cigar City Mafia team, with a special match of the junior derby league at halftime. The Switchblade Sisters is the team in blue, and since we were sitting right next to their team box, we made them "our" team so we could have someone to root for.
